BURLINGTON, N.C.- Not a day goes by that Susan Paul doesn’t think about her granddaughter, Toni Gwyn.
The 17-month-old was found dead inside her parent’s home on July 11 after Eden Police say her parents starved and suffocated her.
Paul passed out fliers in Burlington on Wednesday about the candlelight vigil to be held in her honor on Sunday.
“She was robbed of the precious life she would have had,” Paul said.
Paul said the family moved to Rockingham County a few weeks ago, but says the red flags were there all along.
According to Paul, family members called the Department of Social Services several times while the family lived in the Beaumont Court Apartments in Burlington.
“We thought it was awfully strange that when we go over to visit we could see the children in the second floor window, but no one would answer the door. We knew people were inside,” Paul said.
The Director of DSS in Rockingham County confirmed that caseworkers were involved with the family while in Burlington, but would not comment on how many times or if any action was taken.
The Candlelight Vigil is set for July 28 at 7 p.m. at the Beaumont Court Apartments in Burlington.
The Gwyns are currently in The Rockingham County Jail.
