GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Guilford County Detention Center has lost more than half of the detention officers it hired when it opened seven months ago.
41 of the 96 officers were either fired or quit, according to Sheriff BJ Barnes.
Barnes says some were hired too fast with very little training, and some realized that they were not mentally prepared for the job.
“You’ve got situations where they may have feces thrown upon them, urine, spit. These are folks that starting trouble is nothing new to them, and nothing they’re afraid to do,” Barnes said.
According to the News and Record, the jail wold need to increase the number of its staff from 236 to 312 in order to make the facility fully operational, but county commissioners say they’re facing a $41 million budget deficit.
