GREENSBORO, N.C–Greensboro City Council members turned over ownership of the Grimsley High School pool to the Guilford County School District Tuesday night, after nearly 40 years of ownership.
For years, people in Greensboro’s swimming community have complained that the pool is in desperate need of repairs.
Guilford County School Board member Ed Price says the city, which is already strapped for cash, doesn’t have the additional resources needed to fix the pool
“We don’t have a million dollars that we can take and fix this pool,” Price said.
Greensboro City Council member Zack Matheny says repairs to the pool could have been fixed sooner, but priorities were placed on building an aquatic center and other projects.
Matheny says a contract written in the 1970s gives the city council the legal right to turn the pool over to the district.
City leaders have offered the district $400,000 to repair the pool.
Members of the school board and city council have considered raising more money through a public or private partnership.
The Guilford County School District has not said when or if they will make the repairs.
