GREENSBORO, N.C.–Skip Alston left his position as chairman of the Guilford County Commissioners less than a year ago, and now he wants to build a multi-million dollar apartment complex in Greensboro.

Alston is planning to build a new 84 unit apartment complex called “Asberry Courts Apartments” off South Eugene Street.

The property which sits on about five acres of land, will include a gated entrance and exit, clubhouse, exercise room and picnic area.

The complex will have 1-3 bedroom apartments. Rent will range from $650-$825.

“When we thought about what was going on up at Elm and Lee Streets, we said we wanted to be a part of this overall improvements to this entire area,” Alston said.

Experts agree that now is the perfect time for a construction project like the one Alston is planning.

Jon Lowder, with the Piedmont Triad Apartment Association, says South Greensboro is a booming area for apartment complex construction, due to its proximity to downtown.

Lowder says it can be tough to find an apartment but many complexes have vacancies.

“Six months ago, apartment vacancy was at 8.7%. Now, it’s at 8.3% and you know that’s an average across all three cities in the Triad,” Lowder said.
