ALAMANCE COUNTY, N.C. — Alamance County authorities, along with Alamance-Burlington School Board members, are trying to prevent an increase in gang activity.

On Monday, members of the Alamance County Gang Task force showed the board images and trends of what they’re seeing throughout the community.

Sgt. Brandon Jones says there are a number gangs in the school system.

“Once we get a hold of them [gangs], they change and do something else,” Jones said.

Jones says he’s seen gang members as young 10, and as old as 65. He said the most popular gang in Alamance County is the Red Family Mafia or RFM.

He says gang members have been spraying graffiti on buildings and school property. Students, he said, are also practicing gang symbols during school hours.

“We want to prevent these kids from joining gangs,” he said.

School officials, along with law enforcement, plan to be out in the community throughout the summer promoting the DARE Program and other programs to help fight the problem.

Jones fears the gang activity is spreading to other counties.

“The circle of criminal activity committed by these people claiming to be gang members in my eyes makes them just as dangerous as any other gang member would be,” Jones said.
