GREENSBORO, N.C.– Greensboro City Council leaders are considering a proposal by a group of entrepreneurs for a project that would create 1,000 jobs in the area over the next several years.
“Shift Accelerator” would have 100 companies create the jobs over a 10 year period.
The project will serve as a gateway for startup companies to receive funding, mentoring, and networking through a 12 week program. After the program, the goal is to have a product from the company that they can sell to gain more investors.
Joe Scott, owner of Geeksboro Coffeehouse Cinema in Greensboro, wishes a program like Shift Accelerator had been around when he started his business.
“They’re so many hoops and so many hassles that we have to contend with. It would be helpful if someone at least showed us what those hopes we’re and what those hassles could be,” Scott said.
The entrepreneurs are asking the Greensboro City Council for $1.5 million.
The Council is expected to discuss the issue Tuesday. If approved the project could be up and running in the coming weeks.
