GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Greensboro City Council approved an ordinance on Wednesday to reinstate a curfew for teenagers following Saturday’s fight.
The measure passed in an 8 to 1 vote Wednesday morning during a two-hour meeting that was called to address the issue.
The curfew goes into effect immediately. It bans anyone under the age of 17 from downtown Greensboro between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. unless they are accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Those who are caught violating the ordinance could potentially be arrested.
Council members discussed a city-wide curfew, but that measure was not approved.
City council members could revisit the curfew in 60 days.
“Greensboro City Council reinstated the downtown curfew today. I think it was the right move. Public safety for ALL citizens is number one,” Greensboro City Councilman Zack Matheny tweeted on Wednesday.
City leaders expressed concerns after multiple fights, gunfire and vandalism occurred over the weekend.
City leaders also discussed adding up to 50 officers downtown during the weekend in addition to new traffic restrictions. During the weekend, traffic along Elm Street would be converted to one lane between Lee and Lindsay Streets from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m.
