GREENSBORO, N.C.–Two incidents last month at the Sebastian Village Apartments on East Washington Street in Greensboro have many concerned after several college students are accusing Greensboro Police officers of Misconduct.
On April 16, police responded to the robbery of a pizza delivery driver on Booker Street. Greensboro Police Chief Ken Miller says a K-9 unit was called out and led to an apartment at the complex which is just a few feet away. Two students from North Carolina A&T and two from Bennett College were inside the apartment.
According to a complaint filed against the department, the students says officer searched their home for drugs and weapons.
Miller stated nothing was found and no one was arrested, but a week later officers were called to the complex again, this time due to excessive noise.
Miller says it was a graduation party with over 100 people, and those attending were drinking.
“This problem started to go downhill fast,” Miller stated.
Three Bennett college students were arrested for resisting arrest and charged. Miller says no guns were drawn, but an officer pulled out his stun gun.
The students claimed the officer used excessive force. Miller said the department is still looking into that.
The Bennett College students have hired Daryl Atkinson with the Southern Coalition for Social Justice to represent them. He believes the police overreacted.
“Not only do they potentially have the memory of a celebratory event marred by this incident, but they also could potentially face criminal convictions. We see that as fundamentally unfair,” Atkinson said.
Miller said the complaints will be reviewed by his department.
The result of those findings will them be turned over to city council.
