GREENSBORO, N.C.–Guilford County School officials are hearing from angry parents who are concerned about the Standard Mode of Dress Code Policy.
The Standard Mode of Dress Code aims to alleviate peer pressure, while preventing behavioral problems. Over 30 schools in the district have enacted the policy.
Under SMOD, students have to wear certain color shirts, pants and skirts. The code’s policy is set forth by a leadership team made up of parents, teachers and administrators.
Many parents, like Magen Eller whose daughter attends Guilford Middle School, feel there is no learning value to the dress code.
“It’s just too nit-picky. I think it takes the focus off of education,” Eller said.
Eller and a small group of parents plan to keep voicing their concerns until school officials change the policy.
The district says even if it did the change in dress code, the policy would not take effect until the 2014-15 school year.
