GREENSBORO, N.C.–Guilford County Schools Superintendent Mo Green is asking for an additional $13.6 million in funding for the 2013-13 budget.
“I went to the board and I told them the time is now,” Green said.
The $13 million is a part of the $189 million GCS is requesting from Guilford County Commissioners.
Green says the additional funding would go towards capital improvements, school supplies and employee raises.
“I want the information out, so everyone can know what’s going on,” Green said.
Green is also concerned about Gov. Pat McCrory’s proposal to cut teacher assistants state-wide.
Green says if that happens, the district will have to reduce the days teacher assistants work or eliminate them all together.
“That translates to about 200 teacher assistants. That is a real cut,” Green said.
Green says the district made significant improvements this year. A number of students increased their performance and the graduation rate is at its highest it’s ever been.
However, Green says these improvements can’t continue without the proper resources.
Guilford County Commissioners will hold a public hearing on the school budget June 6 at 6:30 p.m.
The meeting will take place in the Commissioners’ Meeting Room on the second floor of the Old County Courthouse in Greensboro.
