LEXINGTON, N.C– Lexington Police are still investigating what led up to what they say was a case of road rage on South Main Street Tuesday afternoon.
Police received a call about a road rage incident between 35-year-old Derek Gribble and 22-year-old Colton Johnson. Investigators say both men got out of their vehicles and began fighting in front of the Pilgrim Auto Electric Shop.
Investigators believe that’s when Gribble stabbed Johnson in throat.
According to a Lexington Police arrest warrant, Gribble then left the scene in his Toyota Yaris.
Jimesha Nesbitt, a witness, followed him until she saw a North Carolina State Highway Patrol trooper making an unrelated traffic stop. She alerted the trooper, who then arrested Gribble.
The warrant states that Gribble had blood on his body, and that a knife was found in his vehicle.
Robin Church, Johnson’s aunt, still can’t understand why this happened.
“We are going to miss him. I mean he was just 22. I just don’t know why,” Church said.
Gribble has been charged with murder and is currently in Davidson County Jail.
Johnson’s family says they are planning a memorial in his honor.
